Located just off the northern tip of Scotland we enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, visiting Orcas and other cetaceans, stunning scenery and lots of wildlife. Orkney has a great music scene with various festivals throughout the year, sports centres and clubs, wonderful restaurants and bars, art, culture and world-famous archaeology. No wonder it appears on the top 20 best places to live in the UK!

Current Vacancies

Mixed or farm vet

We are a 10 vet, independent mixed practice 60% farm, 40% small.  We have three branches on mainland Orkney and also cover the smaller Islands.  Our herds are predominantly beef suckler with some dairy and sheep.  We are a pro-active and well-equipped practice.

With one of our vets planning his retirement, we have an opportunity for a new vet to join our friendly and experienced team.  A genuinely mixed position with farm bias or farm position is on offer.  New graduates receive excellent support and a place on the XLVets new graduate programme.  Our unique rota means no on call for weeks at a time, working days are generally short and lunch breaks happen!

Generous remuneration package on offer, a car and accommodation can be provided; various memberships are paid; health and dental insurance; CPD is encouraged and funded and local ‘active life’ gym membership is available too.

Registered Veterinary Nurse

We are a 10 vet mixed practice with 3 branch surgeries.  Our main branch is in Kirkwall where most of our small animal work takes place, we also have a branch open 3 times per week for consultations in Stromness and a branch for farm animal and equine work in Harray.

Due to one of our nurses planning to retire, we have an exciting opportunity for a new RVN to join our friendly and supportive team.  Our modern surgery has excellent diagnostic equipment including digital (and digital dental) Xray, the latest in-house laboratory facilities and separate dog and cat wards.  We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate veterinary nurse who works well within a small team.

This full-time permanent role is 37.5 hours per week plus Saturday mornings as per the rota (currently 1 in 6).  The main duties will be in theatre, with nurse clinics and there will be a small amount of reception work.  As we are a mixed practice there would be an opportunity to work with horses and farm animals too.
